S.A.G.E. is a guild, not a union. Our aims are to improve the skills and competencies of editors, to improve the working conditions for editors, and to represent editors at governmental level. When speaking of “editors”, we also imply sound-editors, editing assistants, loggers and sub-titlers. While we do provide contact details for the convenience of producers, S.A.G.E. is not an employment agency, and cannot be held responsible for verifying the competence of any editor.
It the producer's responsibility to interview any candidate and ensure the have suitable skills for the needs of their particular production. Please ask for personal references or examples of recent work to make your own judgement. Also be aware that more experience and/or a broader skill-set comes at a price: like most things in life, you get what you pay for.
There is a downloadable contract which has been drawn up by legal counsel. It is available to protect you both you and the editor. Please use it to prevent misunderstandings.
The rate card is a guideline. It allows for a broad range of salary scales, which can vary depending on the nature of your production. Many editors will be willing to negotiate a lower rate for a medium-to-long-term contract, for example.
There are three tiers of membership:
Student Members – Members who have little or no experience, and are serving an apprenticeship or are currently enrolled in a tertiary institution within a course involving screen editing or post production. Where noted, these members may be competent at logging and/or sub-titling.
Associate Members – Editors who do not qualify for full membership, but are actively involved in post production.
Full Members – have been editing professionally for over 5 years, or have 10 screen credits to their name.
